Bond measure explored for Alpine schools
The current bond assessment, passed to build Joan MacQueen Middle School, is due to expire in 2025. Under that bond the annual tax payment is $21 per $100,000 assessed valuation ---- about $84 a year for a house assessed at $400,000. “This new bond would extend those payments,” Ryan said. “Nobody would see any difference in their tax payments.” Throughout California school districts are suffering from state budget cuts the past few years. The Alpine district alone has lost $2.5 million in state funding since February 2009, dropping to a current budget of $16,448,093, according to Rob Turner, the district’s business manager. “Those are not one-time hits,” Turner said. “Those are ongoing hits. Will they come back? We hope so. Over a million dollars of our budget this year is one-time income.” Continued.. Powerlink construction project questioned at meetingPicture by East County Magazine
The focus was on the undergrounding of two electrical transmission lines through downtown Alpine, a $200 million project that could last up to two years. “This is far from a done deal,” Jacob told the audience. “That’s my opinion, by the way.” More than 500 people attended, including SDG&E spokespeople and county officials from the departments of Planning and Land Use and Public Works. Hands shot up when Jacob asked how many in the audience were concerned about or opposed the project. It is a $1.9 billion effort to transmit 1,000 megawatts of clean, reliable energy from Imperial County through rural East County to San Diego. Alpine is the only place on the 120-mile route that will have underground construction. It would be done in short stretches for up to two years, according to SDG&E. SDG&E is scheduled to start placing two 230-kilovolt feeder electrical transmission lines beneath Alpine Boulevard in May. Forty room-size vaults for maintenance and operation of the lines will be installed under the two lanes of Alpine’s main east-west streetDownload a SDG&E powerpoint with more info here.
