Have fun exploring the future of this area’s water use at the East County Water Festival on Saturday, Sept. 8, in Santee!
Hosted by the Padre Dam Municipal Water District, the entrance to the free family event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. is at Fanita Parkway and Ganley Road.  The Helix Water District, the County of San Diego and the City of El Cajon are partners for the program.
There will be sweet treats, activities for everyone, face painting, a take-home craft, and popcorn. Opportunities to sample beverages using purified water and touring the facilities to see how wastewater is cleaned and purified will be available.
“We will be using some of the wastewater collected by all three partners,” said Emma Shea, Padre Dam communications assistant, noting that the local purified water is not used now for tap water. “Right now we recycle some of our wastewater.”
Shea said eventually the Padre Dam and Helix water districts, which serve much of East County including Alpine, will be using purified water.
“We are creating purified water right now . . . for research and public outreach,” she said.
The Advanced Water Purification Demonstration Facility at the Water Festival creates 100,000 gallons of purified water every day, according to the district.
The same modern technology that provides water to Disneyland and more than 600,000 Orange County residents is used at the Santee facility.
